Tare

Many measurements are made in Q.A. testing. It is often desirable to measure a sample in a container, while obtaining only the weight of the contained sample. The procedure by which this is done is called taring the container.

Procedure:

Step 1- Obtain the desired measuring container and place it directly on the scale.

Step 2 -
Press the tare button located on the scale (A). Note that the scale resets itself to zero (B).

Step 3 -
Fill the container with the sample. Note that when the container is not on the tared scale, a deficit equal to the container weight is shown.

Tare: Measuring the exact weight of a sample in a given container is done by the tare method. The scale with the empty container on it is tared to read zero (step 1 and step 2). The container may then be filled with the sample (step 3).

Step 4 -
Place the container filled with the sample on the scale. Having been tared, the scale reading will now indicate the weight of the sample in the container. Record the sample weight.

Note:
  • Some scales have multiple tare capacities. This makes it possible to measure the contents of an unopened can (the can fill weight). Refer to the appropriate instruction manual for details on the scale in your lab.
  • Clean the scale and measuring container when finished.
